2. Before you start

Before starting the BioProject submission process, it is helpful to prepare key information and documents in advance. A BioProject acts as a central hub that connects various datasets generated from a single research initiative. Therefore, submitting a BioProject requires a comprehensive overview of your project, its contributors, and its related research outputs.

This guide outlines the information you should prepare before beginning the submission process to ensure a smooth and efficient registration.

1. Submitter Information

Prepare detailed information about the submitter (PI or responsible researcher). You will need the following:

  • Full name (English and Korean)

  • Email address (institutional)

  • Organization / institution name (English and Korean)

  • Department / lab information

  • Country

  • Contact details for a secondary person (if applicable)

This ensures proper attribution of the BioProject and allows K-BDS to contact the responsible party if additional information is needed.

2. Group / Affiliation Information

Indicate the group or organizational affiliation for this project. This is typically your research group, department, consortium, or institutional affiliation. If no group is associated, you can proceed with your personal profile.

💡 Tip: If your institution or consortium has an official K-BDS group, selecting it helps maintain consistent project records across submissions.

3. Project Type

The step in BioProject registration is selecting the type of project. There are two main categories:

  • Primary Project – a single research project that serves as the main BioProject unit.

  • Umbrella Project – a higher-level project that groups together multiple related BioProjects under one overarching initiative.

👉 Choose Primary Project in most cases, unless your work is part of a larger, multi-project effort.

4. Release Date

Specify when the BioProject should be released to the public. You can choose to release immediately following processing or release on a specified date for public access.

⚠️ Note: For Umbrella Projects, only immediate release upon registration is allowed — release on a specified date release dates cannot be set.

5. Project Details

Provide descriptive information about the research project:

  • Project Title (English & Korean): Short and descriptive title summarizing the project’s focus

  • Abstract (English & Korean): Brief summary of the project’s scientific background, objectives, and significance

  • Association with Umbrella Project: Indicate if this project is part of a larger umbrella project

📌 Recommendation: Write the abstract at a non-technical level to improve discoverability and readability for a broad audience.

6. Research Grant Information (Optional)

If the project is supported by a specific research grant, provide the following details:

  • NTIS project number (if available)

  • English and Korean titles of the research grant

  • Funding agency / supporting organization

  • Project period (Year)

7. Publications and Intellectual Property (Optional)

Include information about any publications, patents, or other outputs associated with the BioProject:

  • Publications: PubMed ID or DOI

  • Domestic patents: Application or registration number

  • International patents: Application or registration number

Providing this information improves project discoverability and connects related research outputs within the K-BDS ecosystem.
